J E Knauf's extraordinary paintings of Native American's and
cowboys/cowgirls, are created by a unique painting process and
combines both abstract and impressionistic styles. By applying
two artistic styles, the artist is able to achieve a focal point to
attract the viewer's eye. Often, Knauf targets the facial
features of his subject and enhances that area with a masterful
impressionistic style. Kyle Lawson of the Arizona Republic
once wrote of Knauf's paintings, "the faces are inescapable,... like
John Singer Sargent".
What truly sets this artist apart however,
is his unique painting process and medium for which he paints
on. Knauf cuts hollow core doors to size, finishes the edges,
and uses multiple layers of paint and glaze to created his glossy
finished product.
This extraordinary and beautiful painting,
titled Mary L, is a prime example of this artist's work and original
technique. Such as his trademark, this painting is completed
on a finished hollow core door cut to size and is masterfully
painted in multiple layers of paint and glaze.
